10 Warning Signs of Adrenal Fatigue and How to Prevent Burnout

You used to have the energy tackle everything life threw at you. A go-getter from the day you were born, you rarely said no to a challenge. Now, it's tough keeping your eyes open in meetings. You're snapping at people constantly, sleep is elusive at best and you feel weak and unfocused.

Do You Look in the Mirror and See a Train Wreck?

Basically, you feel awful, but don't know why.

My goal is to make you aware of how chronic stress is impacting your life and to prevent you from reaching such dire states of health deterioration.

Before I explain preventative measures...

There are many more early warning signs. Please reference here and here.

Why Does Adrenal Fatigue Happen to Us?

In a single word, stress. More specifically, chronic stress. And you're not the only one. According to The American Psychological Association and the American Institute of Stress, 77% of Americans regularly experience physical symptoms caused by stress.

Dr. James L. Wilson, author of Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome, says chronic stress and lifestyle affect the body’s ability to recover from physical, mental or emotional stress.

So, over the many years of working a high stress job, being exposed to environmental toxins and pollution, dealing with endless arguments, anger or trauma, and a lack of exercise and a poor diet your body begins to break down.

I like to tell clients, "you are not a machine. The Terminator is a fictional character, and even he isn't indestructible."

So now that you know you are only human,

How can you reduce your stress, rejuvenate your body, and start to feel better?

Proper Diet

Food is our first source of medicine. Begin repairing your ailing adrenal glands at the grocery store.

Nutrient Dense, Low Sugar, Healthy Fat & Fiber Foods to Include:

Coconut, olives, avocado, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, salmon, chicken, turkey, walnuts and almonds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds, kelp and seaweed, and Himalayan sea salt.

Foods to Avoid and Why:

Caffeine, which interferes with sleep, gives your adrenals little recovery time. If you can't give up your morning indulgence, stick to one or two cups in the morning and switch to water or decaffeinated tea later in the day.

Sugar and sweeteners, including high-fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners. Stay away from sugary foods, cereals, candy, and sweets. Sugar is highly additive and can be found in breads, condiments and dressings. Use raw honey or stevia instead.

Processed and microwaved foods. The microwave has its own evil demons, but for the purpose of this blog, microwavable food is full of hard to digest additives, fillers, and preservatives. Stick to the outer edges of the grocery store where the food is fresh and replenished often.

Hydrogenated oils like vegetable, soybean, canola, and corn oil. These are quite inflammatory and can lead to adrenal inflammation. Only consume good fats such as coconut oil, olive oil, organic butter or ghee.

Meditation is so effective for reducing stress and healing the body because it slows down your bodily functions, giving them a chance to rest and recuperate. It's like a reset button for your mind-body. It also promotes awareness by attuning you to the sensitive rhythms of your body. Once you begin meditating regularly, you'll be able to feel your body reacting to stress before it starts to scream at you and thus prevent negative reactions that cause emotional and physical harm.

The only thing you can control in life is your own actions and reactions. Meditation helps you choose your thoughts and emotions to better control your actions.

Restorative Yoga

Ah, yoga. My favourite way to move my body.

Restorative yoga, like meditation, slows down your racing mind and helps you focus on what really matters, your health. In a restorative class you hold poses for longer, ease into postures, and learn how to consciously relax your tight muscles. Proper deep breathing is also an integral part of this class, helping you relax and connect your body to your mind.

IV Vitamin Therapy

You may have heard of IV Vitamin Therapy and are wondering what the heck it is. It's gaining traction in the wellness community as an effective and efficient way to supply your body with the nutrients needed for optimal health.

Most of us don't get the right amount of vitamins, minerals, micro-nutrients, amino acids, healthy fats, and carbohydrates for our bodies to function properly. Even if you think you eat a balanced and healthy diet, you may be missing out.

Reiki, also known as energy healing, is an eastern method of clearing stagnant energy and negative emotions from your body. If you've read any of Caroline Myss' books (she's a very talented Medical Intuitive), you'll know that stuck emotions and stagnant energy can lead to the development of disease in our bodies.

Reiki is an effective preventative treatment to help you reduce anxiety, heal headaches, and overcome depression. It has many other psychological and physical benefits.

Our Energetic Body Worker, Tara Sue, incorporates body manipulation in her energy healing sessions. Learn more about Tara and how she can help you.

Who doesn't love a great massage and the healing power of touch. This really doesn't need a lot of explaining, but I would like to introduce Adam, our in house RMT. He specializes in a massage technique called Trigger Point Therapy, which releases tight trigger point nodules in muscle tissue. This technique is less taxing to a massage practitioner’s thumbs, fingers, wrists and arms and more gentle on your body than a traditional massage.

Adam will soon be certified in Cranial Sacral Therapy. Hear him speak about this treatment at our event on April 27th, 2017. Contact us to register for this complementary event.
